In our new fortnightly update, we revisit one of our earlier episodes of Event Ninja News to answer Angela’s question – “How do you tap into a wider market to promote your event?”

A few years ago we had a great question from one of our viewers… “How do you tap into a wider market to promote your event? Do you buy lists? If so – how to find which company provides the better lists to use? I find that our company always uses our own membership database to send out everything. However they are already our members, we need to get those people who are not members to attend our event”. 

And I bet she wasn’t the only one who wanted to know the answer!

Here is my advice:

Get other companies to send your invitation to their database!

If you can find companies that have your exact target market on their database then you are going to get a much better strike rate than if you bought a cold contact list. These people already know and trust the company they have subscribed to, so your invitation coming from them is going to get much more attention.

So, why on earth would a company send out my invitation to their database, I hear you ask?!


To sell to a whole new audience.

If you can provide an avenue for these companies to “sell” to the people you have attending your event, then they will jump at the chance to add your invite to their newsletters, etc.

All you need to do is sit down (with a glass of wine perhaps?!) and make a list of all the organisations who would potentially want to sell to the people at your event.


1. delete anyone who is a direct competitor

2. choose the ones who have your specific target market on their database.

Remember: the guests at your event are a captive audience. Who would like to have their logo on your screen, their brochure in your show bag or a special 5-minute presentation slot at your event?
